Background of the Study

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) represent a significant public health concern globally, with millions of patients affected each year. These infections, often associated with medical procedures or hospital stays, contribute to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs (WHO, 2023). In Nigeria, the burden of HAIs is substantial, with inadequate infection control practices, poor hygiene standards, and resource limitations in healthcare facilities contributing to the high incidence of these infections (Oluwaseun & Adebayo, 2023). Zamfara State, located in northwestern Nigeria, has been particularly affected by challenges in infection control practices due to a shortage of trained healthcare workers, limited access to clean water and sanitation, and a lack of effective hand hygiene protocols (Ganiyu et al., 2024).

Hand hygiene, including proper handwashing and the use of hand sanitizers, is one of the most effective measures to prevent the transmission of infections, particularly in healthcare settings (CDC, 2023). Studies have shown that poor hand hygiene practices in hospitals increase the risk of HAIs, such as urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and bloodstream infections, which are prevalent in both public and private healthcare facilities in Nigeria (Olufemi et al., 2024). In Zamfara State, there is a lack of consistent data on hand hygiene practices among healthcare workers, and infection prevention protocols are often inadequately enforced or ignored (Yusuf et al., 2023).

Given the challenges associated with HAIs and hand hygiene practices in Zamfara State, it is crucial to assess the current state of hand hygiene practices in hospitals and determine their impact on the prevalence of hospital-acquired infections. This study will provide valuable insights into the role of hand hygiene in preventing the spread of infections within healthcare facilities in the state and inform strategies for improving infection control measures.

Statement of the Problem

Hospital-acquired infections continue to pose a significant threat to patient safety and public health in Zamfara State. Despite the known importance of hand hygiene in reducing the transmission of infections, many healthcare workers in the state neglect or inadequately implement proper hand hygiene practices (Ganiyu et al., 2024). This poor adherence to hand hygiene protocols has contributed to the persistence of HAIs in hospitals, which are often associated with extended hospital stays, increased treatment costs, and higher mortality rates (Oluwaseun & Adebayo, 2023). However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the relationship between hand hygiene practices and the incidence of hospital-acquired infections in Zamfara State.

Without an understanding of the current hand hygiene practices, the barriers to their implementation, and their impact on HAIs, it is difficult to develop effective strategies to reduce the prevalence of these infections. Therefore, this study aims to assess hand hygiene practices among healthcare workers in Zamfara State and evaluate their impact on the rates of hospital-acquired infections.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the current hand hygiene practices among healthcare workers in Zamfara State.

2. To evaluate the relationship between hand hygiene practices and the incidence of hospital-acquired infections in Zamfara State.

3. To identify the barriers to effective hand hygiene implementation in healthcare facilities in Zamfara State.

Research Questions

1. What are the current hand hygiene practices among healthcare workers in Zamfara State?

2. How do hand hygiene practices affect the incidence of hospital-acquired infections in Zamfara State?

3. What are the main barriers to the effective implementation of hand hygiene practices in healthcare settings in Zamfara State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Poor hand hygiene practices are positively correlated with a higher incidence of hospital-acquired infections in Zamfara State.

2. Healthcare facilities that implement strict hand hygiene protocols have lower rates of hospital-acquired infections.

3. The availability of hand hygiene resources (e.g., soap, water, hand sanitizers) significantly influences the adherence to hand hygiene practices in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on healthcare workers in hospitals across Zamfara State and examine the hand hygiene practices in these settings. The study will be limited to assessing the impact of hand hygiene on hospital-acquired infections and will not address other infection control measures, such as antibiotic stewardship or environmental sanitation. Limitations of the study include potential bias in self-reported data from healthcare workers and challenges in obtaining accurate infection data due to underreporting or incomplete records.

Definition of Terms

• Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs): Infections acquired by patients during the course of receiving healthcare treatment, which were not present or incubating at the time of admission.

• Hand Hygiene: Practices related to the cleaning of hands using soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizers to prevent the spread of infections.

• Infection Control Protocols: Procedures and measures implemented within healthcare settings to prevent the transmission of infections among patients and healthcare workers.

• Healthcare Workers: Individuals employed in healthcare settings, including doctors, nurses, and other support staff, who provide care to patients.
